Those of us on the Board of the Lyre Association are becoming increasingly excited about our upcoming summer lyre intensive, which promises to be a unique summer gathering for lyrists of all levels. (Beginners are especially welcome!) It will be very much a "hands-on" event, in the spirit of a lyre camp, dedicated to giving all participants the opportunity to hone their lyre-playing skills through a focus on technique, tone production, improvisation, reading skills and, of course, lots of ensemble playing, singing, and movement work!

We have been very inspired by conversations that we have had with our special guest, master lyre teacher Anna Prokovnik Cooper from Northern Ireland. Some of you may remember Anna from Lyre 2006 in Belfast or Lyre 2003 in Keene. Anna is one of the leading lyre teachers in the United Kingdom, where she travels widely to give lyre workshops and performances, tirelessly promoting the lyre as an instrument in the public as well as private sector.

We will meet from Wednesday evening, August 13, through Sunday noon, August 17, at the beautiful Temenos Retreat Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania, not far from the Kimberton area. According to its website (www.temenosretreat.org), the center "is nestled on 56 wooded acres in the beautiful Brandywine River Valley . . . . Meditation foot trails meander through rolling hills, forests, meadows and streams. This scenic property includes modern and historic buildings." The building in which we will be working and eating is air-conditioned. Lunch and supper will be catered in a dining area that spills over onto a large wraparound porch.

We urge you to take note of deadlines and early bird discounts on our flyer and registration form. Also, please note that we will attempt to make conference music available to those who register by July 25.

A limited number of accommodations are available in two of the buildings at Temenos. In the newer, air-conditioned Retreat Center are eight bedrooms (six doubles and two triples), each with its own bathroom, at a cost of $35/person/night with two people to a room, or $25 with three, plus 8% tax. In the 18th-century farm house (no air-conditioning) are three singles (sharing two baths) at $35 plus tax. Those staying on-site can use a kitchen in the retreat center to prepare breakfast. Please note that lodging at Temenos is limited and will be available to those who register first.

To arrange for accommodations in private homes for $25 per night in the Kimberton area (about 17 miles away), please send an e-mail, if possible, to Margo Ketchum at(otherwise, call her at 610-917-9501) as soon as possible—July 30 at the latest. Finally, a list of hotels in the region is available on this website.

Please plan to join new and old lyre friends from all over the country for this summer's special musical gathering!
