LANA Lyre Intensive ~ July 19-223 ~ Kimberton Hills, PA
Playing the Lyre with Joy! II
with Gerhard Beilharz

Gerhard BeilharzPlans are quickly progressing for the Lyre Association's 2011 Summer Lyre Intensive to be held at the Kimberton Hills Camphill Village, beginning on Tuesday evening, July 19, and going through noon on Saturday, July 23. A conference intended for all ages and abilities, it will, for the first time, include special needs adults as well as young lyrists! The conference will be very much a "hands on" event, in the spirit of a lyre camp, dedicated to giving all participants the opportunity to hone their lyre-playing skills in both small and large groups. In addition, we will have sessions in singing and Spacial Dynamics®.

Our special guest from Germany, composer and master teacher Gerhard Beilharz, will lead us through morning and afternoon full group sessions in technique and repertoire for all levels as well as listening and improvisation activities. We will also have morning and afternoon small group sessions, so that all participants will have a chance to do specialized work appropriate to their ability and experience in addition to working on a group of pieces designed for everyone. Youth and special needs adults will have their own small groups, as will beginners, who are always welcome! In addition, the youth will have their own program in the afternoon, which will include recreational activity, and the special needs adults will have their own ensemble work in the afternoon.

Another highlight of this conference will be the preparation and presentation of one large work involving all adult lyrists and a youth chorus. This is music that became very beloved by those who attended Lyre 2006 in Belfast—Colin Tanser's Everyman, the three-movement work commissioned for that conference. We are excited about the possibility of taking up this piece once again this summer!

Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, a beautiful rural community in southeastern Pennsylvania, is a perfect location for such a conference. In addition to the comfortable indoor spaces where we will play, there are lovely walking paths, where one often meets the friendly and welcoming village residents, and an onsite café where we will have our lunches and suppers catered each day. Camping will be available in the village in addition to accommodations in motels, hotels, and private homes in the area.

It is our hope that many of our friends from all over the North American continent will consider joining us, perhaps even bringing along a student or two. Our 2011 Summer Lyre Intensive promises to be at least as rewarding and enjoyable as our first Lyre Intensive in 2008—perhaps even more so because of the participation of the extended lyre community!
